Viska is the sweetest sheltiegirl we were so lucky to have from her swedish family. She fell right into place with the other two rascals in the house. She has stolen our hearts completely.

Viska has been shown twice since she arrived, BOS, cert and cacib both times :-) I hope that her impact on our small sheltie population will be great, with her solid tempearament, good structure and fantastic movements.

Hekla delivered three healthy boys on new years eve. Moli is the father. All are doing very well, have opened their eyes and started to play now at three weeks.

Fjár og hjarð var með jólafund 1. desember. Þar voru stigahæstu hundar deildarinnar (af hundasýningum HRFÍ) hverrar tegundar heiðraðir og fékk Krummi heiðurinn fyrir hönd sheltie að þessu sinni, enda komst hann í sæti í tegundarhóp á tveimur sýningum af fjórum.

Krummi fetar þar í fótspor ekki ómerkari hunda en Mola og Felixar :-) Felix náði reyndar þeim árangri að verða stigahæsti hundur af öllum tegundum deildarinnar fyrsta starfsárið hennar, en þá var ekki búið að kaupa bikar....

Gaman að þessu og falleg viðurkenning fyrir hellings vinnu, Krummi hefur verið glæsilegur fulltrúi okkar á sýningunum, glansandi fínn og vel sýndur.

Úttekt

Eftir sýninguna var skundað beint upp í Málningarskemmu á bak við Dekurdýr og þar beið aldeilis fallegur hópur. Þangað var stefnt shetland sheepdog eigendum með hunda sína í úttekt hjá Birgittu Svarstad. Af 37 skráðum hundum á landinu mættu 26 :-D

Birgitta fór yfir hvern hund, skoðaði á borði og mat hreyfingar á gólfi, en Þorbjörg hljóp með þá alla og stillti upp. Ég skrifaði eins og ég gat náð niður og reyndi svo að romsa upp úr mér samantekt fyrir viðstadda, eins hátt og ég gat, því lofthitakerfið keppti ansi hressilega við raddböndin.

Það tók tvo tíma að komast yfir hópinn, en þeim tíma var vel varið. Ómetanlegt að fá alla svona saman, geta litið yfir kynslóðir, séð saman systkini með foreldrum og heildina. Glöggt auga Birgittu missti ekki af neinu. Ég tók saman í grein sem birtist á sheltie.is helstu atriðin sem hún nefndi.

Int. show in Reykjavik 20-21 Nov 2010

Last week has been very busy. After work it was Dekurdyr grooming saloon where the fabulous staff and owners were working long hours, with great help and mentoring from Hugo Quevedas from Peru/Norway. Grooming courses every evening after closing.

On Friday, my dear friend Birgitta Svarstad, flew over to Iceland to judge at the int. show. Stewarding and writing in her ring was just great, we had shih tzu, chihuahua, griffons, aussies, border collies, rough collies, oes, border terriers and silky terriers.

Viska was shown and groomed by the Dekurdyr team under Rodi Hubenthal (Norway) and finished BOS with her first cc and cacib and great ciritque.

BOB AND winner of group 1 (!!) was Ísi´s son: Robba Dan Krummi, only 14 months old :-D.

Two Ísi sons from Ally´s second litter got prize of honour in puppy class, Robba Dan Hrappur was BOB puppy and Robba Dan Rökkvi nr. 2.

After the show, it was time to meet the shelties in Iceland, so we hurried to the premishes were we were hoping at least a few shelties had shown up!

Moorwood Follwo the Fashion

Viska (Moorwood Follow the Fashion) has finally arrived to her new home.

Been counting the days for a month now, so this was a really big day for us. She is looking great, not lost too much muscle in the quaranteen, and is finding her place in the family.

Ewa Friman, who agreed to sell Viska to me, and Birgitta Svarstad, who arranged it, get a BIG THANK YOU from all of us! I hope she will be a great asset to the sheltie-population here in Iceland.

Viska is 3,5 years old, 36 cm and has free eyes. She is by Grandgables Say it Again Sam and Moorwood Set the Fashion. That bitch is by M. Properly Fashion, who was my Bangsi´s litter sister. I was never able to breed from him, so this is an extra icing form me.

Int. show in August

We had the first Int. show in August this year. That makes the int. shows in Iceland four - one each three months.

Brenda Banbury from UK judged shelties - she was quite focused on ears (also with the rough collies and border collies) and in general thought the dogs had too little substance and muscle and carried their tails too high.

Ísi´s babies had a good day, Robba Dan Krumme was BOB and BIG-3 with cc and Robba Dan Ísadora BOS with cc. Both too young to get CACIB. IsCh Blafelds Arctic Gun got the CACIB (and is now waiting to be confirmed an international champion!) and Moorwood Caribbean Night Copy was 3rd best dog with r-CACIB.

We paid Steinunn, Mike and Bella (Moorwood Aflame of Charm) short visit last weekend. I took my good old measuring stick with me and Bella is 33 plus cm, so in the lowest region of the standard, but still within!

She is a funny girl, very quick and agile, curious, a little suspicious of strangers but very kind to everyone. She is quiet in the house, loves to play and is really a perfect little pet to her loving family, Steinunn and Mike.

Ása litla (Undralands Vetrarsól) fór í "heimsókn" á nýja heimilið sitt í gær. Það gekk allt saman vel og hún var örþreytt þegar hún kom aftur heim til hinna hundana, sem tóku hana bókstaflega "í nefið", þefuðu af henni hátt og lágt til að vita hvar hún hefði verið. Heilmikið ævintýri fyrir lítinn 9 vikna hvolp! Eftir smá sopa hjá Lottu steinsofnaði sú stutta og svaf fram á næsta dag.

A new granddaughter of Felix at Bláfelds Kennel is Bláfelds Brenna, by Bláfelds Midnight Sun (cc, cacib) and Island shelties Fáfnir (2cc) - a son of Felix and Fiona.

She is now 8 weeks old, a really nice puppy. Now we are crossing fingers that she will keep size!

Hvolparnir eru fimm vikna og eru farnir að trítla um allt hús. Sól er orðin mun stærri en Vindur bróðir.

Sól var í miklu stuði í dag og æfði sig í veiðum.

Fyrst þurfti að veiða einn spariskó og drösla honum á milli herbergja.

Síðan var röðin komin að teppi sem þurfti að hrista duglega til.

Mamma slapp ekki, enda auðveld bráð.

Vindur bróðir var öllu rólegri, klóraði sér......

og uppgötvaði að það má alveg veiða fótinn. Skellti sér svo með í leikinn.

The puppies are three weeks old today.

The little bitch is growing fast now and has overtaken her brother. Their different characters are starting to emerge and now that I don´t need to stay awake all nights, I am still spending a lot of time just looking at them develop day to day. What little miracles they are.

From one end of the emotional spectrum to the other -

Ísi's (Moorwood Caribbean Blue Lovelace) puppies were born yesterday. It was not an easy task for mum Allý (Grandgables Icelandic Queen) as the first one was in a breached position. In the end, it was a cecarian that delivered three big and strong babies and one 230 gr. tri girl that didn´t make it - she was the one that was stuck for too long and got water in her lungs.

The surviving three are all over 200 grams and are busy suckling mum.

Allý's litter: tri boy, blue boy and a blue girl.

Congratulations to Róbert and his family - and to all of us shelitepeople in Iceland.

...and just now, Sunna was delivering two puppies by Moli, one of each, a 160 gr. boy and a small 100gr. girl. The girl is really touch and go I guess, being so small, but we hope for the best!

Skemmtileg afmælisvika HRFÍ liðin - tvær góðar sýningar og skemmtileg dagskrá sl. fimmtudag. Hlustaði á góðan fyrirlestur um herpes-vírusinn, fyrirlestur um sæðingar og hreint frábæran fyrirlestur Stefaníu um uppruna og sögu íslenska fjárhundsins. Sleppti öðrum örugglega fínum fyrirlestrum til að sjá aðra atburði, eins og bíladrátt husky/malamute hunda, andasmölun hjá border collie, hundadans og veiðihunda taka stand á væng.

Um helgina er það svo ræktunarráðstefna um shetland sheepdog í Noregi. Þangað koma m.a. Tom Cohen frá USA - spennt að heyra í honum.

Double Anniversary Show

The Icelandic Kennel Club is 40 years old this fall. To celebrate, we had a double national show this weekend. It was a huge project for our little club, but everything went amazingly well.

700 dogs were entered to each show, we had 9 rings on saturday and 10 on sunday and the same amount of judges.

I worked with Kari Järvinen both days, but he judged shelties on the saturday. Little Peyji was BOB baby with good critic, but Kari did not like the grown-ups enough to give any dog BOB.

The shelties fared better on sunday, when Jörgen Hindse made Moli (Moorwood Caribbean Night Copy) BOB with cc and Sunna (Midnight Sun, Felix-daughter) BOS with her CROWNING CC! Peyji was BOB baby again.

Moli finished BIG-3, shown to perfection by Thorbjörg (who just came home from working at the Grandgable's kennel in Canada). Ally (Grandgables Icelandic Queen) got Excellent as well.

Congratulations to all, and especially to Robbi for the Champion title on Sunna!!

I did not show anything as I was so busy working at the show.

Other good news: According to sonar, both Ally and Sunna are expecting puppies this fall.

I had not seen the dogs for a whole month when I came home from USA on friday...... They were having fun with friends and looking good - and Lotta was out of coat and Ísi was dropping his in big lumps...... and of course there was a show on saturday/sunday.

Guy Jeavons of kennel Grandgables in Canada was judging shelties so I simply had to enter them both and take them to the show, even if their coat was not in the best condition. I was stewarding in another ring, so Sóley prepared them both for the ring and Lára, my friend and aussie/border collie breeder, took the dogs in for me and Lotta finished up BOB with her first CC and Ísi got a CK and 2.best dog. Sóley's Moli was BOS and got his second CC.

Lotta's report was really nice and Mr. Jeavons talked very kindly about her after the show. Kudos to him. This is probably the only show I am taking Ísi to, so I'm even more happy with his results. Thanks to Sóley, Lára and Auður (who bathed Lotta and took her into the big ring) for their help with everything!!!

Best in show was a beautiful irish setter bitch - not surprising as she was really having her day in the ring, beautifully handled by her breeder/owner.

According to my account, out of 7 siblings of Felix, 4 have cc's and one more has a ck plus a best puppy in show title.

I believe six matings are planned this fall - our luck maybe turning!!

Bella is maturing well but is still (and will be) small. In her small frame, she has excellent body and substance. Steinunn is looking very well after her, daily free walks, lots of companionship and caring. She even brushes her teeth everyday, tells me that Bella comes in to the bathroom smiling when she hears the toothbrush rattling.....

Félagið okkar verður 40 ára á þessu ári.

Ýmislegt verður á dagskrá til að fagna þessum tímamótum og verður síðasta vikan í ágúst sérstaklega helguð afmælishátíðarhöldunum - báðar helgar meðtaldar. Fyrri helgina verður afmælissýning.

Ekki bara ein, heldur tvær! Ein á laugardag og önnur á sunnudag! Hljómaði brjálæðislega þegar hugmyndin kom upp í sýningastjórn, en áður en við vissum af, var búið að samþykkja þetta - og við sjálfsagt búin að koma okkur í botnlausa vinnu og vandræði......... Þvílíkt spennandi!

Nordisk Kennel Union verður með fund sinn hér á landi á þessum tíma, svo við fáum að nota krafta þeirra fundargesta sem eru dómarar. Það eru þau Kari Järvinen, allrounder frá Finnlandi (einn flottasti dómari Norðurlanda að mínu mati), okkar elskulegi Jörgen Hindse frá Danmörku, Carl Gunnar Stavberg, nýbakaður sænskur allrounder (dæmdi terríersýningu hér um árið) og Marie Petersen frá Danmörku.

Þar að auki ætlar frú Jean Lanning frá Englandi að heiðra okkur, en hún dæmdi fyrstu sýningu HRFÍ. Margt breyst síðan þá!

Helle Dan Pålsson, spanieldómari, kemur í boði félagsins, en spanieldeild óskaði eftir henni sem dómara á sérsýningu sem til stóð að halda í ársbyrjun en ekkert varð af.

Heiðursfélagarnir og einu útlitsdómararnir okkar, frú Guðrún Guðjohnsen og Sigríður Pétursdóttir, verða í dómarahópnum. Við eigum þeim mikið að þakka og þær eru enn að vinna fyrir félagið þessar elskur og bera hróður okkar út fyrir landsteinana.

Þá vantar enn tvo dómara til að dæmið gangi upp - það skýrist vonandi fljótlega hverjir það verða.

Þetta gerir samtals 10 dómara - og 10 hringi hvorn dag - og hámark 700 skráða hunda pr. dag. Annars þarf að bæta við!

Að auki ætlum við að reyna að virkja vinnuhundadeild, íþróttadeild og fjárhundadeild í keppnir og sýningar á svæðinu. Já, hljómar frekar brjálæðislega.

Erum strax farin að hafa samband við hringstjóra og frekjast með sumarfrí og annað, við þurfum lágmark 15 hringstjóra til að manna 20 hringi - og svo eru það ritarar, aðstoðarritarar, fólk í miðasölu og gæslu, dýralæknaþjónusta, veitingasala osfrv osfrv.

Eins gott að veðrið haldist, því helmingurinn af hringjunum á að vera úti. Nú, ef ekki, þá skítt með það. Við sýnum samt, förum bara í stígvélin!!

Spennandi?

Springtime is here, beautiful weather today and the leaves are starting to come out on the trees.

Lotta and Rannsy finishing their heats - just as well as Ísi is at a starving point. He has not eaten by himself for the last five weeks - I've practically had to stuff the food down his throat. He has been beside himself because of the girls - I'm already dreading to have to go through this again in six months time........

At least three matings are planned this fall, Ísi will hopefully be a proud father of two litters and Lotta the mum of one. More news much later!

Brilliant news are that Fiona (Aha Hot Fine Fairydream) had one male puppy by Multi Champion Edgelonian the Real McCoy. Fiona was inseminated and the lone puppy taken by cesarian section. It's a sturdy tricolour boy that is doing really well, four weeks old and running around now.

Bella is doing well in Denmark - just started her first heat - and has to take her walks in the lead now instead of running free.

June-show is coming up fast, Guy Jeavons from Grandgables kennel in Canada is most likely judging shelties. Looking forward to having him and his mate Mark over.

Verð að segja að það var léttir að klára sýninguna síðustu helgi. Tveir dómarar veiktust, þar af annar korteri fyrir sýningu, með tilheyrandi stressi. Ég er órúlega þakklát þeim félagsmönnum og erlendum dómurum sem hjálpuðu okkur að útvega staðgengla. Allt er gott sem endar vel og helgin var frábær og menn og hundar skemmtu sér konunglega.

Það eru þó undantekningar á því og mér finnst ákaflega leitt að heyra dæmi um ósmekklega framkomu einstakra gesta okkar við aðra og þá sérstaklega dónaskap við starfsfólk í dyragæslunni. Sýningarnar okkar, eins stórar og viðamiklar og þær eru orðnar, eru mannaðar af félagsmönnum í sjálfboðavinnu og það er slæmt ef einstaka gestir láta persónuleg vandamál sín og geðvonsku bitna á samviskusömum ungmennum sem reyna sitt besta við að framfylgja þeim reglum sem sýningastjórn hefur lagt þeim til.

Ég sá ekki dóma á sheltie en mér skilst að úrslit hafi verið eftirfarandi hjá dómaranum Hans Van Den Berg: Bláfelds Arctic Gunn varð BOB með CACIB og endaði BIG-4, litla beibíið Moorwood Caribbean Night Copy varð 2. bh og fékk íslenskt meistarastig og Fáfnir fékk VG. Engin tík var skráð að þessu sinni. Hamingjuóskir með góðan árangur. Mér reiknast til að þetta hafi verið fjórða alþjóðlega stigið hjá Leo og því hægt að sækja um C.I.B. titil? Það væri nú glæsilegt.

Júnísýningin er næst á dagskrá og undirbúningur fyrir hana fer að hefjast. Ég geri ráð fyrir að Guy Jeavons, sheltieræktandi (Grandgables) dæmi þá sheltie og engin spurning að við sheltiesjúklingarnir fjölmennum!

Allt rólegt

Bella dafnar vel og missir nú barnajaxla í gríð og erg. Steinunn sendi mynd um daginn:

hún lítur út eins og úfinn ungi....... feldmikill tíkarhvolpur.

Nú fer að líða að alþjóðlegri sýningu hér heima. Bara þrír sheltie skráðir hjá Hans Van Den Berg frá Hollandi. Ég skráði ekkert, enda sýningastjóri. Hlakka mikið til, allt of langt frá síðustu sýningu. Flottir dómarar að koma og margar tegundir sem fá "sérfræðing" sem dómara.

Held að nýjar breytingar á sýningareglum séu góðar, ég hefði viljað ganga enn lengra og hætta borðastandinu, en önnur Norðurlönd vilja halda borðunum inni og við fylgjum þeim. Borðarnir hjálpa líka áhorfendum að skilja hvað er að gerast í hringnum, svo fremi sem þeir séu með litadæmið á hreinu, en ég held að flækjustigið sé einfaldlega orðið of hátt, borðarnir og litirnir of margir til að þetta sé sæmilega gegnsætt. Draumurinn er að umsagnir dómara séu skráðar rafrænt inn og birtist jafnóðum á skjá sem áhorfendur geta séð (nei nú er ég farin að fantasera).

Samkvæmt nýjum reglum verða allir stálpaðir hundar dæmdir til einkunnar - líka meistarar - og allir sem ekki eru íslenskir meistarar eða fullcertaðir geta fengið meistarastig - líka meistarar og öldungar. Vonandi sjáum við meira af gömlu hundunum okkar á sýningum í kjölfarið. Það er svo mikilvægt að fá þá inn til að sjá hvert ræktunin er að stefna, bera ungu hundana saman við. Fallegur öldungur í góðu formi með réttar og heilbrigðar hreyfingar segir okkur líka ýmislegt um ræktunina...... og eigandann!!

Allt gott að frétta annars af hundum heimilisins, Lotta og Ísi alltaf jafn kát og glöð, leika sér enn eins og hvolpar og Rannsý labrador reynir sitt besta að leika pent með, þótt hún detti stundum í brussuganginn. Hún leggst oft niður fyrir sheltana og leyfir þeim að kútveltast ofaná sér, eða þeir fara upp í sófa og kljást við hana "upphækkuð". Frekar fyndið að sjá þessa stærðaraðlögun leikjanna.

Ísi er að fá nýjan feld - varð í raun aldrei feldlítill í þessu losi, og Lotta er að byrja í feldlosi. Hún er komin með mjög góðan tíkarfeld, væntanlega frá mömmu sinni ;-)

Bella 4,5 mánaða

Bella er að nálgast fimm mánaða aldurinn og er enn svolítið kríli, svo ákveðið var að dóttir mín, sem býr í Kaupmannahöfn, tæki hana í nokkra mánuði til að byrja með, amk. þar til við sjáum hvort hun komi til með að ná stærð. Dóttirin er afsakplega sátt heyrist mér og ég er viss um að Bella verður það líka - það er ekkert grín að vera lítill hvolpur í mánaðar einangrun á Íslandi... Ég fer því út núna næstu daga til að sækja krílið til Svíþjóðar og koma því fyrir í Köben.

Stora Stockholm

Skellti mér enn eina ferðina á Stora Stockholm / Hund 2008 og í heimsókn á Hestmosaveginn að hitta Moorwood hundana og heiðurshjónin Svarstad. Hreint ótrúlega fallegur hundhópurinn núna, allir í fullum vetrarfeldi og Jónas Rafnar, sem fékk að koma með í þetta sinn, skemmti sér konunglega við að leika við hunda á öllum aldri. Það var gaman að sjá fjórar kynslóðir af bláum fegurðardísum, Crystal, Cindy, Flash fallegasta og Betty litlu, sem vonandi er með fullt af litlum bláum hvolpum eftir Sammie.

Litla Charm, sem nú heitir Bella til minningar um mömmu Bangsa míns, heilsaði upp á tilvonandi eigendur og lék við Jónas Rafnar. Hún verður lítil tík, en fallega byggð og fríð. Geri ráð fyrir að taka hana heim í febrúar á næsta ári. Með henni fæ ég aftur örlítið af Dísu minni, gamlar og fallegar ekta Moorwood línur. Ég var með í för þegar pabbi hennar, M. Handsome Boss, varð World Winner á heimssýningunni í Portó í Portúgal um árið - ævintýraleg mörg þúsund kílómetra ferð á húsbíl sem hægt væri að skrifa bók um.

Stora Stockholm sýningin var fín, á milli 80 og 90 sheltie hundar sýndir. Ch. Edgelonian The Real McCoy varð BOB og náði líka 3ja sæti í grúppu að mig minnir, hjá sama dómara. Flash varð besti rakki 2. Þemað á þessari sýningu var NKU, Norðurlandasamstarfið, og það var frábært að sjá myndskeiðið þar sem íslenski fjárhundurinn var kynntur á risastóru tjaldi í úrslitunum, undir dynjandi "Ísland er land þitt" laginu. Myndskeiðið var unnið upp úr sérlega fallegur myndbandi um þjóðarhundinn okkar, sem selt er á skrifstofu HRFÍ. Held að standi til að færa það yfir á geisladisk fljótlega. HRFÍ var með kynningarbás á sýningunni og í úrslitum mátti heyra hin ýmsu júróvisjonlög frá Norðurlöndunum.

Frekari fréttir bíða nýs árs, en eins og venjulega er ýmislegt verið að bralla og malla.

Ég ætla að taka "secret" á þetta og óska þess að árið 2009 sjáum við loks árangur erfiðisins í litla sheltie-stofninum okkar, með bláum, svörtum og gulum hvolpum!!

Gleðileg jól öll saman og gæfuríkt komandi ár. Við Jónasar, Lotta, Ísi og Rannsý þökkum liðið.

BIS-2 puppy Moorwood Caribbean Night Copy

At the kennel club´s Int. show in september, IntCh IsCh Moorwood Caribbean Night Heiress (Dimma) was BOB. R-cacib went to IsCh Aha Hot Fine Fairydream (Fiona) and the CC went to Felix´s daughter, Marvelous Sunlight (Sunna). Lotta got an Excellent and price of honour, same for Grandgables Icelandic Queen (Allý) and Mira got Very Good. No male was shown.

Two puppies were shown, Bláfelds Arctic truck (Stormur) in baby class - with price of honour, and Moorwood Caribbean Night Copy (Moli) in 6-9 month old puppy - also with price of honour. He ended up being BIS-2 puppy for the day.

The best part for me was to see Moli go so far in his first show. He behaved beautifully and was a joy to watch.

Sóley and family flew over to Sweden to pick up Moorwood Caribbean Night Copy, Moli, today. He is now just over five months old, born March 4th, a beautiful tricolour boy by Ch. Moorwood Caribean Crystal Blue and Ch. Grandgables Say it again Sam. Eyes examined at 8 weeks, free.

Moli has been living with his breeders, Birgitta and Per Svarstad, till now, and I know they are going to miss him. I understand he is a very strong character, not afraid of anything or anyone and very agile (and an exceptional jumper.....!!!!).

Moli is going into the quarantine station in Hrísey for four weeks and Kristinn, the caretaker, is going to look well after him for us.

Birgitta sent some new pictures of him today and I attache one here. This five month old is looking very masculine and handsome and will hopefully finish up in perfect size. Thank you so much for everything Birgitta and Per, I can´t wait to see Moli out running with the other shelties here!

VeBell´s Shaded-Bellona got four strong and beautiful puppies by Felix in about three months ago. The old guy is going strong.......
They were just moving in with new families when I was in Sweden for the world show and I got to visit and say hello to one of the boys and the little lady in the litter. Absolutely beautiful. Verna, the breeder, is keeping little Indra. A dreamlitter she said, and looking at the pedigree of the puppies I kind of understand what she means....... ;-) Pictures of the little guys can be found at her website, www.geocities.com/vernakjellman/.

We don´t live in Iceland because of the nice weather, that is for sure. However, there was nothing to complain about yesterday, when we had abnormal heat everywhere in the country. Records were broken in many places, including Reykjavik, where we had an unprecedented 26,7°C. Inland, the heat went up to 30°.

Dimma has just left after staying with us for 10 days and now Mira, daughter of Fiona and Felix, has arrived and is staying for a week. In yesterday´s walk we went berry-picking and the dogs even tried some delicious black berries. The berries are very early this year, usually they are not ripe until middle or even late august. If this is the greenhouse-effect, I am not complaining.

World show og Molinn

Mynd: Hver er komin í gestaherbergið?? Alltaf nokkur forvitin trýni á glugganum þegar ég vaknaði á morgnana......

Lagði land undir fót og hélt einu sinni sem oftar til Stokkhólms á hundasýningu. Heimssýning í þetta skiptið.

Yndislegt að gista hjá Birgittu og Per að venju. Við Birgitta byrjuðum á því að panta okkur gistingu í USA, en við stefnum á The Nationals sheltisýninguna í apríl á næsta ári. Þar sem ég sit við tölvuna í kjallaranum, heyri ég krafs í glugga og hver var mættur úti og hafði haft veður af vinkonu sinni...... Flexi minn!! Það voru fagnaðarfundir. Felix er kóngurinn í kvennabúrinu núna, mér sýndist hann búinn að velta Boss gamla úr sessi. Aðeins meiri fyrirferð í mínum en fyrir ári síðan. Alltaf sami góði voffinn samt og hann á svo sannarlega skilið að veita hundaflokknum forstöðu, eins yfirvegaður og klár strákur sem hann er. Svo er hann farinn að grána aðeins á trýninu, mjög virðulegur.

Heimssýningin var þokkaleg, ágætlega skipulögð hjá frændum vorum, Svíunum, en dagskráin í stóra hringnum var samt sérstök svo ekki sé meira sagt. SKK setti upp "show" þar sem sænskum hefðum var gerð skil eftir árstíðum, og föstudaginn horfði ég á lúsíur, jólasveina og jólahald með öllu tilheyrandi á heitum sumardegi. Sunnudag var það sumarið sem var aðeins meira við hæfi á heitum júnídegi, en ég heyrði á öðrum gestum að haustið á fimmtudeginum og vorið á laugardeginum hefði verði álíka undarleg upplifum og jólahaldið sem ég sá.

Gaman að horfa á shelite-keppnina, frábært að sjá alla þessa fínu hunda og ræktendur samankomna. Ekkert sérlega sammála dómurunum en það er nú ekki nýtt. Flash (Moorwood Caribbean Blue Treat) toppaði daginn fyrir mig, þvílík unun að sjá dýrið hlaupa í hringnum. Hef ekki séð fallegri hreyfingar í sheltiehring.

Fór ekki á sérsýningu sheltieklúbbsins á laugardeginum, enda sömu hundar sýndir. Vafraði þess í stað á milli og naut fallegra hunda. Sunnudaginn var ég að mestu í hring þar sem ungir sýnendur voru að keppa. Þorbjörg sýndi Sammie og hún og aðrar íslenskar stelpur stóðu sig virkilega vel.

Svo var það Molinn. Birgitta tók frá hvolp fyrir fjórum mánuðum og hann vex og dafnar vel. Myndarstrákur, samfeðra Ísa. Á að koma inn í Hrísey 11. ágúst ef Guð lofar og flytja inn til vinkonu minnar, Sóley Möller, mánuði síðar! Smellti nokkrum myndum af gullinu:

Dýrin í Ólátagarði

Það er óhætt að segja að það sé fjör á heimilinu. Ísi og Lotta leika frá morgni til kvölds og Rannsý lætur sitt ekki eftir liggja þegar hún fær að vera með í fjörinu. Lotta er klárust, hún finnur upp á leikjunum og stofnar yfirleitt til þeirra. Ísi er alltaf til í tuskið og gæti ekki verið betri félagi fyrir þær tíkur, Lottu og Rannsý. Rannsý leikur orðið pent og fallega við litlu dýrin, leggst niður fyrir þau svo þau getið tuskað hana til.......

Lotta var sýnd á sumarsýningu HRFÍ og ekki hægt að segja að dómurinn hafi verið góður! Enginn sheltie fékk framhald. Ég var samt ánægð með Lottu skott í hringnum. Engin athugasemd var gerð við brotna fótinn eða hreyfingar af þeim sökum.

Allý hin kanadíska var sýnd í fyrsta skipti og kom hún í snyrtingu á Hegranesið daginn áður. Myndarleg tík sem Róbert má vera stoltur af!

Ég fann stutt myndskeið sem ég tók af Lottu og Ísa skömmu eftir að Ísi kom til landsins. Bangsi gamli er með þótt hann taki ekki þátt í eltingaleiknum og það er nú aðallega hans vegna sem ég set þetta inn. Sakna hans.

Bangsinn minn

Elsku besti Bangsi minn kvaddi óvænt fallegan maídag. Bjúgur á fæti lagaðist ekki þrátt fyrir lyfjameðferð, svo hann var drifinn i allsherjar rannsókn á dýraspítalanum. Þar skýrðust málin smátt og smátt - sogæðakerfið var farið að gefa sig (þrálát magakveisa sem hann fékk á hundahóteli um áramótin ekki ólíklegur sökudólgur) og ofan á það kom í ljós að bein og brjósk var uppétið hjá mjaðmakúlu öðrum megin. Læknirinn mat þetta slitgigt fremur en HD. Tekið saman var gott líf fyrir Bangsann afskrifað, ekki hæg að gera á honum aðgerð til að laga fótinn út af kerfisbiluninni og lítið hægt að gera til að halda þeirri bilun niðri.

Ákvörðun var tekin á meðan Banginn svaf fallega eftir svæfingu fyrir myndatöku. Kvalinn skyldi hann ekki lifa og hundlaus fór ég heim.

Dagurinn var óraunverulegur, áfallið mikið og það er fyrst núna, tveimur mánuðum eftir að hann féll frá, að ég get skrifað um það. Sakna hans mikið og finnst við öll svikin um mörg ár með blíðum og góðum félaga.

Það síðasta sem ég sagði við hann vakandi - og endurtók þegar ég kvaddi hann sofandi : ,,Sjáumst síðar, vinur".

Just a quick update on the two new Felixlitters in Sweden.

I nicked a picture from the Request website (http://web.telia.com/~u97008242/) of the litter by Request Special Rose born 21.02.08. Three girls and a boy - this picture is since they were 5,5 weeks - the boy number two from left. The puppies are almost three months old now.

The second litter was four big and strong as well, two boys and two girls. The mother is Moorwood Hot To Handle. The two girls (picture Birgitta Svarstad): and the two boys, slightly older, here:

I hope I will see some of those at shows in Sweden next year.

I understand two more litters are on their way, so that will make Felix´s litters in Sweden 14 and on average he is giving larger litters than the medium is for shelties in Sweden. It is also nice to see that his progeny are now breeding successfully in Sweden, taking his soundess on to future generations. Can´t wait to see the second generation by the lovely puppies he left here in Iceland. Fáfnir has mated Bláfelds Arctic Midnight Sun (Hekla) a couple of weeks ago, so he might be the first one (knock on wood). We need to import a male for his daughters for them to carry his legacy on and that is being looked into very carefully!

The whole family misses Felix, amazing how attached one can become so quickly. He is just one of those caracters that you can´t help but fall in love with, so easy to live with and just a great companion. I couldn´t be happier with his (and Fiona´s) daughter Lotta, I am enjoying her more than I can describe here in those few words.

11 shelties, 1 cavalier and their two-legged friends met and walked for an hour in beautiful weather today. Ísi followed the pack and had great fun, wasn't quite sure who owned him and tried to go home with almost every one we met on the way. It was so nice to see the shelties run like a heard ahead of us, different sizes, colours and characters!

At the top of a hill we stopped for a photo and somehow managed to get all the dogs together for a minute. The DOGS from left to right: Flóki, Tristan, Fáfnir, Fiona, Ísi, Bangsi, Lotta, Lena, Fróði, Mira og Leó.

Moorwood Caribbean Blue Lovelace left Hvatastadir, the quaranteen station in Hrísey, yesterday. He was in very good spirit and accepted his new conditions with an open and happy mind. Thanks to the staff at Hvatastadir for taking such good care of him.
Robbi sent some pictures from his first real walk in Iceland!

He is not the best eater and he is rather thin, so the program next weeks is to get him to eat properly and build up some muscles. The competition with Bangsi, Lotta and Rannsy will hopefully give him his appetite.....

Ísi´s caracter is lifely, he is a typical sheltie in the respect of being very social - he wants to be a part of the family and be where we are. He loves to cuddle and is a quiet companion in the house, but he also loves to play outside and run free with other dogs. His best friend is already Lotta, as I am sitting here writing this, they are in a serious tug of war with an old sock they found somewhere.......

After living with my sister in Denmark up to this age, Ísi is VERY used to children and active households and loves to play with toddlers.

Int show March

Lotta was shown for the first time on March 1st - Int. show in Reykjavik. The judge was Diane Anderson from USA/Norway and she gave her the following critique:

Young puppy with excellent body proportions and topline. Well laid back shoulders. Low hocks. Very nice neck. Still in short puppy coat which affects her appearance. Excellent movement, long reach and drive. Typical shetland head. Good colour. Well presented.

As Lilja was off skiing in Austria, Lotta was shown to her Best puppy of breed title by Þorbjörg, who did it with her usual professionalism. Thank you Þorbjörg!

IsCh Moorwood Caribbean Night Heiress (Dimma) was BOB and got her crowning CACIB for her Int. title. Second best bitch was Lotta´s mum, Aha Hot Fine Fairydream (Fiona) and she got the last cc for her IsCh title. Third and fourth were the Felixbabies Mira and Sunna, both with CK. Great results and congratulations to all!

Out of seven Felix puppies in Iceland, four are already CK winners and three of those CC winners. Not a bad legacy for the big guy!

After Felix's return to Sweden, he has sired two 4-puppy litters and two more litters are on their way! Hopefully we will see some of those Felixbabies in the showring in Sweden next year!

Lotta just finished puppyclass and is just the easiest dog ever to train. It´s almost like she just listenes to the teacher and then does what is expected. Our old guy, Bangsi, got the treat of weekly obediance class as well, and its the same story with him, its not really like a training session as he just does everything perfectly.

In other news, Ísi (Moorwood Caribbean Blue Lovelace) gets out of quaranteen today!!! Our friend, Róbert (Sunna´s dad) is picking him up and bringing him to Reykjavik tomorrow. More of that and pictures later!!

The hearding dog club (Group 1 minus Schäfer) organised its first show this weekend. We managed to persuade Kenneth Edh to come from Sweden and judge for us, and we had a nice day with a nice dinner afterwards. Only 7 shelties where entered, and of those, Dimma was BOB. Sunna, Felix´s daughter, got her first cc and was second best bitch! Congratulations to winners.

Christmas time

Since Felix left for Sweden, it has been raining constantly here in Iceland. We miss him a lot, but it took him no time at all to settle back in with his pack in Sweden. His little daughter, Lotta, keeps up the fun in the house, she is a bundle of joy and everyone´s favourite, to say the least! Bangsi is like a puppy again, plays with her all day long and even Rannsy the labrador tries to behave when she is playing with her. Lotta is now over 5 months old, 34 cm and sweet as an angel.

She broke her right hindleg two months ago and it has been difficult to get it to heal right. Two operations, cast, nails, pins and braces - she is still limping heavily, but we hope a proper use of the leg will come with time (and more muscles!).

On Christmas day we woke up to a blanket of snow covering eveything. It was like magic - and afther all this rain! The dogs went crazy in the snow, we played for hours and little Lotta was very quick to discover the wonders of this white matter that could be rolled in, chased and eaten, and all at the same time!

We wish everybody a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Rispu-baby

With so few breedable shelties in the country and so much trouble we've had bringing the litters up, every new little sheltielife is so unbelievingly precious to us.

I went to see the 5 week old little bitch of Rispa and Felix today and she looks lovely for her age. She is a bit smaller than the other pups have been at this age, but then she had a slow start. She is catching up quickly and Thorbjorg will have her hands full the next weeks!

Last days of summer

The Icelandic summer is short and already august is coming to an end. The summer has been eventful -Fiona gave birth to her litter and so did Rispa. Fiona had two bitches and Rispa had one bitch puppy. Both mums are fortunate to have such great owners and families that have taken such good care of both babies and mums. Indeed, that goes to say about all the four breeders that have mated their bitches with Felix over the last year and a half.
One of Fiona's little girls, Midnight Sun (Lotta), will join our family here in Garðabæ and we couldn't be more pleased. She is a lovely puppy with a sound temperament. Thank you so much, Vignir and Guðrún.

This summer I also visited my friends Birgitta and Per Svarstad at the Moorwood kennel in Sweden. It is always such a pleasure to see them and their beautiful shelties.
When I left I had a precious luggage, as my friend, Sóley, is buying a blue boy from the Svarstad's. His name is Moorwood Caribbean Blue Lovelace (Ch. Grandgables Say it Again Sam and Moorwood Caribbean Blue Heather), the only blue and the only boy in a litter of three. For the first months he will stay with my sister in Denmark, or untill he is old enough and passes his bloodtests to leave for quaranteen in Iceland.
Needless to say, we are so excited for this little guy, a new colour for the small sheltie population in Iceland and with such a strong pedigree. Besides, after spending a week with him at my sisters house in Denmark, his character is just adorable.

Summershow

The national summershow went well, two of Felix´s offsprings became BOB and BOS.

BOB was Fáfnir and BOS was Tilda. Both got their first Icelandic CC! Fáfnir finished BIG-3. Great results for these two youngsters.

These last couple of weeks have been very busy indeed. First Rannsy the labrador started her heat. Not allowed to touch her, as Lilja doesn´t want sheplabs. Then Fiona, mother of Mira and Fáfnir, came for a mating. Then Disa started her heat, not allowed to touch her as she´s to old. Þorbjörg´s Rispa was the next one to stop by and my Lilja was VERY happy to see me go on a short holliday with Þorbjörg to her grandmother´s farm, where I could take my time with Rispa. Bangsi has been going BANANAS with all those bitches around and we are not best of friends these days, with all the testosteron running high.

We are praying for strong and healthy litters, it was such a disapointment that Dimma lost her lone puppy few weeks ago.

We have a championship show coming up 21. and 22. June. Lilja is not going to show me or Bangsi as we are both ISCH. Hopefully, we will see some of my offsprings, this time in juniorclass, so they are eligable for the CC.

BIS!

Fiona (Aha Hot Fine Fairydream) became BIS at the int. show in Reykjavik in February! As if that was not enough, Felix´s and Fiona´s daughter, Mira, was BIS-puppy in the biggest BIS lineup of puppies ever here in Iceland.
Felix was BOS and got his crowning CACIB and Dimma got R-CACIB. Two more of Felix´x puppies got a price of honour, Mira´s brother Fáfnir and Tilda from the Akureyri litter. All of Felix´s babies got excellent critics.
WHOW, this will be remembered as the Great Sheltieshow! Owner and breeder, Vignir Sigurðsson, with little Mira, BIS-puppy and Irish judge Cathy Delmar.

Fiona´s sire is Per and Birgitta´s Trent and her dam is also of old Moorwood lines, from kennel Woodmist in Sweden. Her breeder is Birgitta Nilsson of the Swedish Aha kennel. Congratulations to all!

A big congratulation to Vignir and his wife Guðrún. It doesn´t get any better than this! A big hug aas well to Thorbjorg who did such a great job of showing Fiona to the BIS. Fiona was put into Thorbjorg´s hands litterally seconds before she was being judged in the breed; a spur of the moment thing. Just shows how capable that girl is in the showring!

Felix had a good time with Guðrún - he went over for a mating-holliday and hopefully we will succeed this time with Dimma and get healthy puppies. Hekla was mated as well, but we are not as hopeful that she is pregnant.

Per with Dimma

The Icelandic Kennel Club´s other international show of the year, was held 7. and 8. October 2006. Judge for shelties and group 1 was Rajko Rotner from Slovania.
My "dad", Per Svarstad, was judging in the show as well and Lilja was working for him in the ring.
It was so nice to have Per come over and get to show him the few shelties we have and get his comments on our possibilities for breeding. We had a small get-together at Lilja´s place, the weather was beautiful even if it was a little cold.

Felix got BOB and his third CACIB (and BIG-2). Fiona (Aha Hot Fine Fairydream) was completely out of coat after her litter, but still got a cc, BOS and CACIB.

This morning when I woke up, everything was covered in thick, soft snow outside. We went out to play and have FUN! I did not want to catch snowballs like Rannsy the labrador, but I loved running around and jumping like a rabbit in and out of heaps of snow.

The weather changes fast here in Iceland, it is not long since it was summer, just a couple of weeks since there was fall, and now it is winter time.

The second puppy in Dimma´s litter passed away yesterday evening. Seems he came down with the same infection as the first one and being small, did not have much to spare to fight it off.

Sad news today, the firstborn pup of Dimma did not make it after all. He got an infection that progressed very fast, and in spite Gudrun and the vets at Selfoss doing everything in their power to keep him alive, the little guy died today. Every little sheltielife is so precious, and after going through all the problems we´ve had here in Iceland, trying to get this beautiful breed going, it was so sad to loose this battle. Thank you Gudrun for all your effort and sleepless nights, we win some and loose some. The second brother is doing well and Dimma seems content with her lone puppy.

Dimma gave birth to two puppies last night. She started her labour around midnight and my mum (Lilja) drove to Selfoss to assist Gudrun, Dimmas mum. At two o´clock came the first puppy, a 128 gr. shaded sable boy and the second one, 118 gr. just under an hour later. The first one was a little traumatized but started soon to suckle mum, the second one came out running and demanded food immediately.... they will hopefully be quick to make up for the small birthweight.
Mum and Gudrun waited expectantly for more, and waited a little more, and then some, but at 5.30 decided to declare the end - a litter of two beautiful boys, well done Dimma.

Nala, my dame in Akureyri, gave birth to 3 girls and a boy some 10 days ago. All are doing well.

For some reasons, the pictures don´t show up larger than this, so we have to wait for better ones to see them properly!

Fáfnir and Mira 10 weeks

My first two puppies in Iceland are doing well, the little boy went to a home in Gardabaer (where I live now) and the baby doll girl stayed with her breeder, Vignir, and his family. Their names are Fáfnir and Míra.

Mira has still more coat on, a real furball. She is a little lady, likes to cuddle. Fáfnir is more robust and daring.

Unfortunately they will not be able to come to the Int. show in October, where "grandpa" Per Svarstad will be one of the judges, as they will be just under 4 months old.

Vignir just sent some pictures of the puppies. They are now 4 weeks old and the male has catched up with his sister and is in fact heavier (and longer). The bitch has more fur and likes to cuddle and kiss, while her brother is the explorer, is already hopping down stairs (!!!) and is a real daredevil.

Latest news from the showring,
The Icelandic kennel club just had it´s summer show. I was BOB again and got a good critiqe from Annika Ulltveit-Moe and then was BIG-3 under Ole Staunskjær.

My housemate, Rannsý the labrador puppy, was shown for the first time in the smaller-puppy class and won her class. Good for her!

Summer in Iceland

Summer has arrived with endless light, almost 24 hours of the day. We like to take midnight strolls in the neighbourhood and it is just like its middle of the day, except there are no people or traffic around!

I just had the first litter born, with my girlfriend Fiona (Aha Hot Fine Fairydream). Two puppies survived the birth, a dog and a bitch, but unfortunately two were stillborn. Here are pictures of the little baby - bitch, she was larger and fatter than her brother......

Fiona is doing great and is nursing the little ones well. Her good friend Lena is not allowed in the nursery and Fiona will guard her puppies well if Lena manages to stick her nose in.

The male was very small when born, just around 100 grams and the breeder, Vignir Sigurðsson and his family, did a very good job at kepping him alive for the first critical hours. He is developing well and will hopefully catch up with his sister in short time!

Happy Easter everybody!
Last week has been relaxing for everybody, the family decided to "do nothing", no travel, skiing or hiking, just watching tv, eating good food and taking lots of naps.

Disa and Bangsi are really good at taking advantage of the living room furniture and I am catching on.

No worries though, I am not getting fat! Big Jonas has started taking me along for his jogging and he sais I am good. Much better than Disa who has a hard time keeping up with him, and Bangsi, who gets in the way of his running all the time!
Little Rannsý is growing, she will outgrow us shelties in couple of weeks or so.

How time flies.....
Its already March 20, spring is in the air in Iceland, believe it or not. Ad-mum has been busy trimming the garden (and putting up a big fence for us, four-legged friends). Latest news are that I did well in my first Icelandic show, was BOB and BIG-1, got my cc and cacib (and thus became an Icelandic + Nordic champion). Not bad, eh?

I got the critic of being of excellent type with wonderful head and expression, very masculine. As if I didn´t know that......;-) My coat was not in best show condition with all the underwool gone the week before, but we made the best of it anyway. My coat is coming back now, no worries.

Yes, I have other news as well. We got an addition to the family two weeks ago, when big Jonas got a baby labrador, named Leiru-Rannsý. Not my cup of tea, these labradors, always putting things in their mouth. I tolerate the little thing though and sometimes she is quite cute. Big Jónas is very happy, has been waiting for this little girl for over a year now. Her parents are a beautiful Foxrush pair, imported from England.

Enough of labradors.
We just saw a picture of the Crufts winner this year, have to say the face fell of Lilja. Not sure if we follow the same breed-standard...
Then we got the news the other day, that my dad, Per Svarstad, is coming over for a visit and judging at an int. show here in Iceland 8 September. Looking forward to that!

Well, little Rispa is coming over for a visit, need to see to her needs.

Sheltiewalk!

The weather has been awful these last couple of weeks, snow, wind, rain and what have you. Not easy to go out for a walk. Ad. mum thinks I´m getting fat....
We decided to attempt fait today and with Gudrun, called for a sheltie walk in Sólheimakot, the teaching premishes of the Icelandic Kennel club. 11 shelties showed up and two more came for a visit afterwards - more than half of the sheltie population in Iceland! It was grait fun, lots of luuuuvely ladies. We had a snowstorm, of course. (Lilja, my adopted mum to the right on picture, I am third from the right, then Disa and Bangsi. My kennel sister, Dimma, is second from the left).

When we came back home, tvo nice young girls dropped by, imports from Kennel Aha in Sverige. They were quite shy, one didn´t want to talk to me at all and tried to get back into her car and shut the door, but I was JUST getting her attention when ad. mum called me in. Shxx. Few more minutes, and she would have been mine! Well, some other time.

Bangsi is now my best friend. He is very nice to me, cleans and puffes into my ear, invites me to play,- I just have to keep a distance from his feeding bowl. Loftur, the kitten, is also a good playmate, I see him almost every day and we have some fun. He is now out of his cast and is using his leg well.

Last day of Christmas

It finally cleared up yesterday and we had a long walk in the forest (Heiðmörk). I got to run free for an hour with Disa and Bangsi and that was great. It is raining again today, so only shorter walks for my adopted mum, thank you.

Ad. mom sais I´m settling well, I´m first up in the morning and usually start to tease Disa until she starts to bark at me. That gets everybody up and going and Disa gets the blame, he he he. I think ad. mum is thinking about letting me sleep in the master bedroom tonight, instead of with the other dogs. Well, that was what I wanted all along! Big cheer for me!

All the Christmas deco was packed today, the last day of Christmas was on the 6th, but as the weather was so bad, the celebrations were postphoned until yesterday. In Iceland they have big bonfires, fireworks, 13 santaclauses (jule lads), trolls, elves and all kind of creatures going around the last night of Christmas. I was dressed up in a red hat, to get into the spirit.

Well, must rush, its dinner time for me and I´ve got to watch my food or Disa will steal it!

My day was full of new things. Did some walking with adopted mum, Disa and Bangsi and I even got to run free for a short time. Lilja said I was such a pack animal that I did just like the other dogs, so she let me off the lead when no one was around. Of course I came with the other dogs when she called.
I also had my feet trimmed, nails clipped and some ear-trimming - not that I am fuzzy about those things, but I think Lilja could not wait to get her hands on me on the table. Just glad she did not tie a pink ribbon round my neck with all this done.

I´m eating well and having some fun with my new mates, Disa and Bangsi. They are a bit immature, have to say, trying to express themselves humping me and walking around with their tails like Icelandic sheepdogs. I had enough of this silly behavior and let Bangsi know. I´m respected now. Disa, however, can do what she likes with me. She´s this gorgeous blonde, you know.

I met Loftur the cat agin, he lives at Lilja´s mum´s. He broke his leg only 10 weeks old, and now at 12 weeks, he is using the plastered leg like he was born with it. We played a bit, I let him practise his hunting skills on me, he was jumping on me and hanging in my coat. I also got some squeeking toys to play with at home. Tired now, the action is quite a change from the quaranteen station!
